Will selling in Europe be the same after this change?
The EU is going for a new era of product safety with the implementation of the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), which will take effect on December 13, 2024 (so there is at least time to prepare and evaluate).
The GPSR aims to modernize the EU's product safety framework. At its core, the regulation ensures the safety of all consumer products, including those linked to emerging technologies.
This is a real shakeup for EU Amazon sellers since product safety becomes a top priority, requiring a close look at your offerings to ensure compliance. All this is because there is an estimation of EUR 11.5 billion per year on costs associated with accidents-related to unsafe products affecting EU consumers and society at large.
This can also cause Amazon to face increased responsibility, likely impacting sellers (or making them responsible). The focus on traceability means sellers need robust systems to track products throughout the supply chain, and additionally, businesses must report safety incidents and familiarize themselves with streamlined recall procedures, including mandatory templates and consumer-specific solutions.
With the deadline approaching, vendors should get ready to take proactive steps to prepare for the GPSR, like:
📝 Understanding the Regulation: Thoroughly review the GPSR and its potential implications for your specific products.
🙅♀️ Product Safety Assessment: Evaluate your current safety measures and identify any areas requiring adjustments to comply with the new regulations.
🤝 Adapting Business Practices: Review and update your internal procedures to account for new obligations like accident reporting and product traceability.
By proactively addressing these changes, we can ensure continued compliance and maintain a competitive edge in the EU.
